Court dismisses case against University of Ghana

The Human Rights Court has dismissed the case against the University of Ghana over the closure of some of the access routes to the school.

Some parents of pupils at the University of Ghana Primary School sued the University over the decision to close all access routes into the school.

According to ruling given by Justice Essel Mensah, the suit was not properly brought before the court by the applicants for it to be adjudicated upon it merits hence his decision.

The University of Ghana last year closed all access routes into its campus to the public with the exception of the entrance from the Okponglo intersection, a decision which did not go down well with parents, who subsequently sought a perpetual injunction against the university from continuing with the ongoing restrictions.


Background

The University of Ghana closed all access routes into its campus to the public with the exception of the entrance from the Okponglo intersection.

The closure was announced after the school was forced to suspend its tolling system which generated public outcry leading to the destruction of one of its toll booth by national security operatives.

Subsequently, only vehicles with the 2014 UG sticker were allowed to enter and exit the school through all the access routes.

Some 130 parents whose wards attend the basic school sued the University over the matter.

The parents sought a perpetual injunction against the university from continuing with the ongoing restrictions.
