GNAT appeals for long preparation time for BECE candidates

Accra, June 20, GNA – Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has appealed to West African Examination Council to give the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates ample time to overcome the psychological trauma to prepare for the re-scheduled examination.

GNAT is advocating enough and better time than June 29 and June 30 given by the Council for preparation because the nation does not have enough counsellors in the school system to offer the necessary support systems that would bring the affected students back to normalcy.

A statement in Accra and signed by Mr V. V. K. Demanya, Acting General Secretary of GNAT, indicated that it is the conviction of the Association that the Bureau of National Investigations which has been assigned the duty to earthen the culprits would live up to expectation.

“GNAT hopes that all persons in the chain of the examination processes will avail themselves to the investigators for a thorough work to be done.

“All those found to have compromised their positions in this year’s BECE should bow down their heads in shame for causing unwarranted mess in the country.”

The statement noted that the perpetrators caused the problem because of their selfish ends and the law should deal with them appropriately.

It said the Association one of the reasons for this kind of behaviour might be the moral breakdown which has resulted in all manner of corrupt practices.

Members urged the Government to start looking at the educational system again to find lasting solutions to it.

“The number of papers written in BECE is too many and we need to take another look at this situation.”

The Association noted that it is the hope of members that the pupils and teachers would be strengthened as they go through the challenging times.

Ghana Education Service To Clamp Down On Age-Cheating Officials

The Ghana Education Service (GES), will soon enact a policy to regulate the dates of birth of teachers and other categories of staff in the education sector, Acting Director-General of GES, Dr. Jacob Kor has disclosed.

He noted that many employees of GES swore affidavits to change their birth certificates when they realized they were nearing retirement, or asked for extension of time after their retirement.

The Acting Director-General of Education, who disclosed this at a meeting with stakeholders in Education, as part of his maiden familiarization tour of the Central Region, expressed the hope that the new policy, when in force, would clean the sector of pensioners and pave way for young people.

The meeting was attended by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education, as well as Heads of second cycle and basic schools, Managers of Unit Schools, representatives of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and labour unions.

Dr Kor admonished the educationists and other employees of GES to critically take into consideration their retirement, and plan adequately towards it, reminding them of the fact that “the positions they held were not their assets that would be with them forever.”

Dr Kor was worried of recent reports, which suggested that 46 per cent of teachers did not write lesson notes, and urged head teachers to discredit teachers who did not write lesson notes when they were due for promotion.

He also charged Headteachers of basic schools to strictly enforce the rules and regulations of GES, and show a strong sense of leadership in their schools.

Dr Kor disclosed that head teachers, teachers and other staff of GES would soon be made to sign performance contracts, which he believed would help address the falling standards of education.

The Acting Director-General said the performance contract would be used as a yardstick to either promote or demote staff of the service.

He, therefore, urged them to be abreast with the new rules and regulations of GES, to enable them to do what was expected of them.

Mrs. Mary Owusu Achiaw, Central Regional Director of Education, advised teachers to put in much efforts in the discharge of their duties, change their attitude and behaviour towards work.

She also urged District Education Directors to co-exist with the managers of unit schools to promote religious tolerance.

Nifa SHS headmaster sacked over alleged sexual assault

Information reaching DAILY GUIDE indicates that Alex Acquah, headmaster of Nifa Senior High School in the Akropong North Municipality of the Eastern Region, has been sacked by the Ghana Education Service (GES) over alleged sexual assault.

This follows a suit by the assistant headmistress for attempted rape.

Ms Anna Duodo, the assistant headmistress, took the matter to the Akropong circuit court where the headmaster was charged for sexual assault and attempting to rape his assistant in office in May last year.

Anna Duodo also challenged her transfer from the school by the Regional Education Director following a complaint of rape, after she had filed the suit. The action, she claimed, was taken after several petitions to the Educational Directorate and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

Excerpts of the petition, sighted by DAILY GUIDE read: “As I entered his office, he seized hold of me, dragged me to a chair, tripped me up into it and sat astride me.

I was in a skirt and a buttoned top, he debuttoned the top, took hold of my breasts and fondled them.

“Because there was no one around, all my distress cum protest yells came to naught.

“At this point, he had fully worked himself into a frenzy; he pulled me from the chair and tried to stretch me on a table while he stripped himself naked. He relaxed his grip on me and when he was almost stark naked he let go completely of me.

“Perhaps he thought I had yielded or had been prostrated by the struggle. Then I made an escape with the little strength in me before he fully got out of his boxer pant.”

Meanwhile, lawyers of GNAT withdrew the case for out-of-court settlement with Acquah on 6 May, 2015.

The court further ordered the GES up to May 20, 2015 to come back and brief it on the outcome of the settlement.
