Private universities call for equity

Accra, June 6, GNA – Heads of Private Universities have called on the government and state institutions to accord private universities due recognition in the community of educational institutions in the country.

Professor Kwesi Yankah, Chairman, Council of Independent Universities (CIU), who made the call said no private university has secured Presidential Charter within the past 13 years even though they strongly contribute to national development by raising prominent persons.

“For the past 13 years no single institution affiliated to a public university has been considered worthy of autonomy, this is clear signal that all is not well in the processes towards attainment of charter,” he said at a public forum to celebrate the ninth anniversary of CIU.

Speaking on the theme, “Private Universities as Partners in National Development”, Prof Yankah, said: “How can we help you get a charter, appears now to be ringtone of the National Accreditation Board (NAB).

“Rather than how can we prolong your walk to freedom, which had been the perception of member institutions of CIU.”

Prof Yankah said it is the hope of the Council that the inclusion of a Private University Representation within National Commission on Tertiary Education Governing Board, would promote greater co-operation between private and public universities.

It would also foster the recognition of private and public universities as equal partners within the tertiary educational sector.

He pointed out that although the University of Health and Allied Sciences at Ho in the Volta Region and University of Energy and Natural Resources at Sunyani in the Brong-Ahafo Region are new institutions, they are established by Acts of Parliament and therefore state owned making them fully fledged to grant their own degrees.

“The only difference between these new universities and others is simply because those still struggling for recognition such as Ashesi University, Pentecost University, Methodist University and Zenith University Colleges are privately owned.

“These are not universities; they are called ‘university colleges’ to give you the false impression that they are not yet mature, or are probably inferior and can operate only under the supervision of state-owned universities”.

The Chairman said the concept of affiliation to another university solely hung around the neck of private universities and should be abolished, stressing that it is obsolete, counterproductive, and a disincentive to investment in the private educational sector.

Dr Osei K. Darkwa, President of the Ghana Technology University College, said Private Universities admitted more than 26 per cent of students who complete senior high schools every year.

He said Private Universities have introduced an innovative way of studying known as the transnational education, where students could study for the degree of a foreign university without being taught on the home campus of that university.

Dr Darkwa said another contribution of private universities to national development has to do with providing funds for public universities through mentorship and affiliation process to supplement the revenue of the public universities.

He urged the government to start a process of gradually phasing out the system of affiliation to public universities, and restructure the NAB, as well as streamline its operations to solely maintain standards in universities as done in several African countries.

He also said it is necessary for the state to make scholarships and other forms of support available to private universities, seeking to upgrade their faculty or lecturers to pursue terminal degrees; and capacity building at the graduate level should be considered a national responsibility.

Restructure educational sector – Elise Sanders

The Director of the Webster University Ghana, Ms Christa Elise Sanders, has underscored the need for the restructure of the country’s educational sector in order to improve the quality of students for the job market.

She said that could be done only when the students were equipped with the basic resources such as quality tuition, infrastructure, and a free environment to learn, among others, with the aim of empowering them to match their western counterparts.

Ms Sanders, who was speaking at the TEDx Accra Summit during a panel discussion, indicated that access to quality education would be one of the major factors which would drive the development of the country in the future.

Skills-oriented students

“Improving educational systems on the local front would be in the national interest to help prepare students practically for the job market,” she said.

According to her, there was the need to strengthen the critical areas of the country’s educational systems in order to trigger skills-oriented students who could bring about practical change in the society.

“Students need to be given a solid, holistic education in order to help them to be innovative rather than reproduce the same thing taught in class,” she said.

She said access to basic education must be a fundamental right to citizens in the country and used the opportunity to laud the government for its effort at making education free and compulsory.

Needed support

Ms Sanders, however, indicated that making basic education compulsory would not be enough to satisfy quality but rather there should be access to library facilities, building of more schools, training and hiring of quality teachers, among others, with the aim of building the capacity of students for the near future.

“Looking at the various sectors that need support, it is virtually impossible for the government to effectively provide the necessary support for the educational sector in the short term. It is, therefore, important for the private sector to provide some of the core support needed for the educational sector in order to produce quality at the end of the day,” she said.

Regent University College of Science and Technology holds open day

The Regent University College of Science and Technology has held an open day to allow parents, guardians and prospective applicants to interact with the school administration on courses offered in the university.
The open day, put together by the final year students of the Event Management class, was also to inform the public about their services as well as offer instant admission to applicants who met the admission requirements.

The Senior Vice President of the university, Mr Albert K.Amonoo, said the school offered a combination of courses which had Information and communications Technology (ICT) integrated in all the courses to help keep students in tune with the changing trends. He said ICT was the backbone of most industries and so it was important to combine it with all other courses.

Mr Amonoo said the school also believed in maintaining smaller and conducive environment as these aided in teaching and learning.

“At Regent we believe that students should be able to interact properly with lecturers as well as study at times convenient for them. For this reason, our timetable is designed to fit the lifestyle of both working and non-working students.” He said.

Mrs Ruth Kukua Ntumy-Fletcher, the lecturer in charge of Event Management, said the exercise was also to allow final year students have a practical feel of how to organise and manage a corporate event.

“Although it is a school event, we allowed the students to coordinate, seek sponsorship and interact with the public so they have a better understanding if what they have been taught in class. We believe that through a project such this, the students would be able to organise events themselves and not necessarily rely on companies to employ them” she explained

She expressed gratitude to Blue skies, Fan Milk and Rising star Montessori for sponsoring the event.

Anglican University College of Technology appeals for assistance

Nkoranza (B/A), April 26, GNA – The Authorities of the Anglican University College of Technology at Nkoranza in the Brong-Ahafo Region have appealed to the First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama to assist the Institution to set up three Health Programmes to enhance its development.

According to the University, the Programmes include Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Diploma in Midwifery and Health Assistants.

Reverend Canon Dr. Joe Eyison, the Dean of the School of Food and Health Science of the University made the appeal on behalf of the Institution through the Omanhene of Nkoranza, Okatakyie Agyeman Kudom, when the First Lady paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene at his Palace on Wednesday.

Rev. (Dr.) Eyison said the University had been given the clearance by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to run the three Programmes in the 2015/2016 Academic Year and would therefore need the support of the First Lady to be able to articulate the plans.

He stressed that the Institution had contracted the services of MEVEGA Consortium to draw a curriculum and identified the list of books and equipment that would lead it to get accreditation from the National Accreditation Board (NAB) to start work on the three Programmes.

Rev.(Dr) Eyison identified inadequate classrooms, lack of skills laboratories for the General Nursing and Midwifery as well as inadequate Recommended Text-books as major challenges facing the University, emphasizing that, the position was militating against the immediate take off of the Programmes, hence imploring Mrs Mahama for her assistance in that direction.

The Dean of School of Food and Health Science of the University expressed the hope that the establishment of the three Programmes would serve the people of Nkoranza and its environs and even the entire country to fill the manpower requirement to meet the Millennium Development Goals Four(4) and Five(5).

Okatakyie Agyeman Kudom added his voice to the University’s request and urged the Government to come to its aid, as a way to expand the Academic Programmes of the Institution.

The Omanhene praised Mrs. Mahama for assisting them with a number of development programmes to complement the efforts of Government to improve the lifestyles of the people of the area.

Presbyterian University College, Ghana Visits Presbytery Conferences

As parts of the strategies rolled out by the University to effectively market and widen the visibility status of the Presbyterian University College, Ghana (PUCG) within the country in order to increase student population for the growth of the university, it was the decision of the University to visit the various Presbyteries during their Annual Conference this year.

In all, Thirteen (13) Presbyteries were visited, namely Western, Brong Ahafo, Northern, West Brong, Asante, Sekyere, Ga, Kwahu, Volta, Akyem Abuakwa, Asante Akyem, West Akyem and Akuapem Presbyteries respectively. The various outreach teams were received and hosted warmly by all Presbyteries and offered them the platform to inform them about PUCG and interact with its members.

Among the main reasons for the visit was to reiterate the fact that the PUCG remains the property of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) and thus, the need to strengthen the relationship between the Church and the University in all spheres. Again, the University used the platform to appeal to the various Presbyteries, Groups and Individuals to come and invest in the University by putting up facilities such as Hostels, Lecture Rooms, Administration Blocks, just to mention. Furthermore, as part of measures to acquire a University Chatter, there was an appeal to the Presbyteries to encourage highly motivated qualified professionals within the Church ranging from Professors, Associate Professors, and Senior Lectures to apply and work in PUCG to uplift the status of the University. There was also a general plea to the Presbyteries to encourage their congregations to enroll their wards in PUCG and make it the Preferred Choice.

It is the expectation of the University that, the visit would be an effective channel to attract more investors and prospective students through the Church in diverse ways and attract highly skilled professionals within the Church to join the hard working PUCG team for the total development of the University. The opportunity gave us a forum to deliberate on serious matters affecting the growth of our University. It is our hope that this is going to be a yearly affair, where we will be able to update Chairpersons and Presbyteries on development in PUCG.
