Entry Requirements for Top-Up Programmes

General Requirement for all Programmes
  1. Applicants must have at least 5 (five) credits in GCE “O” Level, including English Language and Mathematics and at least 6 (six) credits in  SSSCE/WASSCE subjects in the relevant areas, including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science with an aggregate not exceeding 24.
  2. Applicants with passes (i.e. D7 and E8) in English, Mathematics and Integrated Science, who completed their HND on or before 2010 can apply to go through a qualifying Pre-bridging Course.
  3. All HND applicants should have obtained at least a Second Class Lower Division in the respective fields.
Specific Requirements
In addition to these general requirements, programme specific requirement is stated below.
  1. BSc. Geomatic Engineering
    HND in Surveying or Diploma in Geodetic/Geomatic Engineering or its equivalent.
  2. BSc. Agricultural Engineering
    HND in Agricultural Engineering or its equivalent Diploma certificate.
  3. BSc. Business Administration
    HND or its equivalent in business-related areas, such as (Accounting, Secretarial, Management, Purchasing and Supply, Marketing, etc.) Concentration for the programme is in the following areas:
    • Human Resource Management
    • Accounting
    • Banking and Finance
    • Marketing
    • Hospitality Management
    • Logistics and Supply Chain Management
    Candidates shall continue in the areas of specialization in their respective programmes for the Top–up. Specializations would be mounted in specific centres depending on the number of qualified applicants.
  4. BSc. Computer Engineering
    HND in Computer Engineering/Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Telecommunication Engineering or an equivalent Diploma certificate.
  5. BSc. Construction Technology and Management(CTM)/QuantitySurveying and Construction Economics (QSCE)
    HND in Building Technology or its equivalent diploma certificate. A sound background in mathematics is required.
  6. BSc. Mechanical Engineering
    HND or its equivalent diploma certificate in any of the following Mechanical Engineering disciplines:
    • Production Engineering;
    • Plant Engineering;
    • Automobile Engineering;
    • Refrigeration and Air- Conditioning and
    • Foundry Technology.
  7. BSc. Statistics
    HND in Statistics or its equivalent diploma certificate.
  8. BSc. Computer Science
    HND or its equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electronics, Data Processing, Information Systems/Sciences and any area related to any of the programmes listed.
  9. BSc. Actuarial Science
    HND or equivalent Diploma Certificate in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Science or Accounting. University graduates holding a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Physical Science or Statistics.
  10. BSc. Information Technology
    HND or equivalent Diploma Certificate in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electronics, Data Processing, Information Systems/Sciences and any area related to any of the programmes listed.
    A first degree in any Physical Sciences and Engineering programme may also apply.
  11. BSc. Chemical Engineering
    HND or its equivalent in Chemical Engineering.
  12. BSc. Physics
    HND or University Diploma in any of the Engineering Disciplines. Graduates from Colleges of Education (Training Colleges) may also apply.
  13. BSc. Petroleum Engineering
    a. HND in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering.
    b. First Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
  14. B.A. Social Work
    Entry requirements:
    I. Diploma in Social Work;
    II. Degree or Diploma in Education;
    III. Diploma from Teacher Training Colleges/ Nursing Training College;
    IV. HND in Management or Human Resource Management; an
    V. Degree or Diploma in Theology and Bible studies.
  15. B.A. Sociology
    Candidates shall hold a diploma in any of the under listed programmes from an accredited University or Institution.
    i. Diploma in Social work;
    ii. Diploma in Social Administration;
    iii. Diploma in Police / Prison Administration;
    iv. Degree or Diploma in Education;
    v. Diploma from Teacher Training Colleges;
    vi. Diploma from Nursing Training Colleges;
    vii. Degree or Diploma in Theology or any Social Science Programme; and
    viii. HND in Business Administration (i.e. Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing, etc.).

A. Entry requirements for postgraduate programmes

  1. Commonwealth Executive Master of Business Administration (CEMBA)
  2. Commonwealth Executive Master of Public Administration   (CEMPA)
The CEMBA/CEMPA programmes are designed by Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to help busy practicing professionals, managers and public officers to gain a higher level of competency in their respective functions, and expand their perspective to encompass a more international outlook. The programmes are offered through distance education, a learner-oriented system allowing greater flexibility in learning while students continue with their regular work.  At the heart of the programmes are the excellent learning materials licensed from some of the top universities across the Commonwealth.
The entry requirements for admission to the programmes are:
  • A good First degree in any discipline, preferably Second class lower or better.
  • Professional qualification (that is chartered level) eg. ACCA, CA, ICA, ICM.
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in senior management/leadership position
  • Satisfactory score in the CEMBA/CEMPA Admission Test. The admission test consists of multiple choice questions designed to test applicants’ capabilities in the following areas: General knowledge; English Language; Quantitative Aptitude; and Reasoning/critical thinking.
3. MBA WITH SPECIALIZATION in the following areas:
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management;
  • Human Resource Management;
  • Finance;
  • Accounting; and
  • Marketing.
The one-year top-up specialization programme is designed for CEMBA/PA graduates to gain MBA specialization and identify themselves in specialized fields in their career paths.
Delivery would be by the E-mode with limited face-to-face sessions in Kumasi and Accra centres.
Entry Requirement: A degree in CEMBA/PA.
4. MPhil/MSc. Industrial Mathematics
The programme is designed to equip mathematically oriented graduates with powerful and up-to-date knowledge and skills in modelling and computational techniques that can be directly applied to solve real life problems that occur in critical areas of industry such as health, environment, energy, manufacturing, financial, agricultural, security, communications, transportation, rural and urban management sectors.
Entry requirement is a good First Degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or Computer Science.
5. MSc. Environmental Science
This programme is open to candidates with a good first degree in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Geography, Culture and Tourism, Natural Resource Management and Agriculture. 
6. MPhil. Post Harvest Technology (Horticulture)
The programme is to train candidates in various technologies in the prevention of post harvest losses.
Application is open to candidates with a good first degree in Agriculture, Post Harvest Technology, Natural Resource Management and Biological Sciences.
7. MPhil / MSc. Logistics and Supply Chain Management
The programme is designed to provide an opportunity for candidates to study contemporary theory and practice as well as pragmatic issues in the field of supply chain and logistics through extensive industrial field trips which would constitute part of the programme.
It is basically targeted at purchasing, supply chain and warehouse managers as well as logistics managers in diverse fields of practice who will wish to upgrade themselves.
Entry Requirements:
  • First degree in logistics and supply chain management with second class lower division or better.
  • First degree in any discipline with appreciable work experience in supply chain, logistics or transport management.
8. MPhil / MSc. Health Informatics
The course is designed for a wide range of people including medical lab technicians, nurses, midwives, medical practitioners, paramedics, and IT managers who want to keep ahead in this rapidly advancing field of health informatics.
Candidates must have one of the following:
(i) First degree with at least Second Class Lower division from a recognised university in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Technology and Communication, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, Environmental Science, Biological Science, Human Biology, Nursing, Paramedics, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Herbal Medicine, Medical Laboratory, Biomathematics, Biostatistics, Engineering, Mathematics or Qualitative Programmes;
(ii) Applicants whose first degrees are not listed under (i) above but have worked in the medical field for at least three years may be considered.
9. MPhil/MSc. Information Technology
Candidates must have one of the following:
A first degree with at least second class Lower from an accredited University or University College in any of the following areas:
Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Communication Technology, Business Information Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, Social Science with a strong background in Mathematics.
Students with weak Computer Science background, especially in programming eg. Social Science students, may be required to take extra courses as may be deemed necessary by the Department.
10. MPhil/MSc in Business Consulting and Enterprise Risk Management         
The programme is open to working professionals from Ghana and other countries who want to develop a career in Business Consulting & Enterprise Risk Management. The entry requirements for admission to the programme are:
  1. A good Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with at least a second class lower or better.
  2.  Professional qualifications (i.e. Chartered Level) in Accounting, Banking, Finance, Administration, Marketing, Management, Insurance, Risk Management, etc. (e.g. ACCA, CIM, CFA, CFM).
11. MSc. Food Quality Management (IDL)
The programme is designed for candidates with requisite qualifications who are already working in the food sector. The goal is to enable candidates to understand the scope of total quality management and ISO based quality systems. It is expected that the training shall build the skills of candidates in understanding consumers’ behaviour, maintaining quality and improving safety in food industries. The programme shall also provide the scientific, technological and managerial skills needed for graduates wishing to follow career prospects in food quality management in agribusinesses, research and public administration. Finally, students shall develop the skills required to develop problem-based and learning approaches together with critical thinking skills.
Entry Requirements
a)      A BSc degree in Food Science and Technology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Nutrition Science, Biology, Agricultural Engineering or Chemical Engineering or any closely related science or technology BSc programme from a recognized university.
12. MSc. Development Management
The Development Management programme is established under the auspices of United Nations Universities (UNU) and implemented by a network of Universities in South Africa, Northern Africa and Europe. The entry requirement for admission to the programme is:
A good Bachelor’s degree, preferably second class lower or better in any of the following disciplines: The Built Environment such as Planning, Building Technology, Land Economy and Architecture; Business; Social Sciences or Engineering.
13. MPhil/MSc. Industrial Finance and Investments
The MSc/MPhil Industrial Finance and Investments programme is developed with the broader aim of producing new generation of Financial Managers and Investment Analysts; and promoting techniques of achieving financial and investment systems efficiency. The course content provides a sound, broadly-based education covering the advanced principles in finance, financial markets and institutions, treasury and investments. By working closely with industry to understand their needs, the programme is designed to produce graduates with the knowledge and skills that businesses tell us they require.
Entry requirements:
A good First degree, preferably Second class lower or better in the following disciplines: Accounting; Commerce; Business Administration; Banking and Finance; Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Actuarial Science; Engineering, Physics, Computer Science and related disciplines.
OR

  A final Professional Certificate (i.e. Chartered Level) from ACCA, ICAG, CFA and CIMA plus a minimum of 2 years working experience.
14. MPhil / MSc. Educational Innovation and Leadership Science
The programme is open to individuals from Ghana and other countries who want to obtain professional qualification in Educational Leadership, Planning and Management.
Entry requirement is any good Bachelor’s degree, preferably second class lower or better in any discipline.
15. MPhil in Political Science
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts or Science. Admission preference would be given to candidates with background in Political Science.
16. MPA in Political Science
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts or Science. Admission preference would be given to candidates working within the Public Service.
 17. MA Sociology
This programme aims at providing students with the ability to undertake   advanced studies in various branches of sociological interest and opportunities for consolidating and developing a general competence in sociological analysis.
Applicants must have a first degree in Sociology or Social Work with at least a Second class Lower Division. Applicants with first degrees in other academic disciplines may also be considered.
18. Master of Education Degree (MEd)/Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
Substantial percentage of University graduates in Ghana find themselves in the teaching field. These graduates engage in teaching without the requisite technical skills needed to translate their acquired knowledge into manageable content that students would appreciate and assimilate. This programme is designed to train the teacher at all levels, including the University Lecturer in the rudiments of effective delivery to students.
Applicants are required to hold a first degree in an appropriate field of study from a recognized university. Applicants with a Graduate Diploma in Education may be considered for admission.
19. MSc. APPLIED STATISTICS
M.Sc. Applied statistics programme is designed for graduates who have professional interest in the use of statistics in everyday life. Graduates in humanities, social sciences, life and health sciences and those who have a need to use statistics in their work but have not had sufficient or current training in applied statistics.
Entry Requirements
  • A bachelors degree (with at least second class lower division) in Statistics, Mathematics or a mathematical related Degree such as Actuarial Science, Economic  Computer science etc
  •  Any other degree plus a Graduate Diploma in Statistics.    
20. MSc.  ACCOUNTING
MSc. Accounting Program is developed with the broader aim of creating a new generation of accountants, through the provision of sound and broad-based education that covers the advanced principles and application of accountancy.
It further hopes to equip students with solid grounding and knowledge in quantitative techniques, appraisals and evaluation of relevant financial issues. The new program encourages an in-depth engagement and understanding of the accountancy professions.
Entry Requirements
1. Applicants are required to hold at least a second class lower degree in any of the following:
        i.            accounting;
        ii.           any other degree with option in accounting; e.g., BSc Mathematics with accounting;
        iii.           any other degree with part qualification from recognised professional accountancy bodies such as: ICAG, ACCA, ICAEW, CIMA, etc.
2. Any other degree with at least second class lower but without adequate foundation in accountancy. These prospective students who get admission into the programme via this route would be required to do additional courses to upgrade them to the requisite level.
21. i.    MSc. Economics
         Options in;
  • Money, Banking and Finance
  • Energy and Resource Economics
(all at the Accra Centre only)
The MSc. Economics is one-year advanced degree programme in the Economic Sciences designed to train professionals for industry both at home and abroad. The rationale is to develop competences in three core courses: macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics plus a host of relevant electives. The entry requirements for admission to the programme are:
  1. A good First degree, preferably Second class lower or better in the following disciplines: BA/BSc. Economics, BA/BSc. Economics (with Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Law, Sociology, Political Science, and History); Bachelor of Business Administration, BSc. Mathematics/Statistics/Engineering /Physics/Actuarial Science/ Environmental Science/ Land Economy/Natural Resource Management; BA/BSc Geography/Geography and Resource Development/Geography and Rural Development/Geography and Regional Planning; and related disciplines.
  2. Satisfactory score in the MSc Economics Admission Test.
B. All applicants must pass a written examination and/or an interview. Applicants who wish to pursue the MPhil must submit (in about 500 to 700 words) the following:
(a) An outline of research proposal
(b) Statement of purpose
C. Duration of the Programmes
All postgraduate programmes are for duration of between 1.5 to 2 Academic Years.

D. Diploma in Architectural Technology (2-year programme)

Entry requirement:
  1. WASSCE/SSCE holders who have credit in three (3) core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science plus credit in three (3) elective subjects.
  2. ORDINARY LEVEL holders with credit in at least five (5) subjects at G.C.E.  “O” level (or its equivalent including English and Mathematics).
  3. PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE IN ARCHITECTURAL DRAUGHTSMANSHIP with passes at SSCE/WASSCE in English, Mathematics and Integrated Science.
  4. CONSTRUCTION TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE (CTC) 1& 2 and other related professional certificates.
  5. FOREIGN APPLICANTS and all others who have any of the above qualifications or their equivalent from an accredited institution.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission to research and higher degree programmes(MSc/MFA/MA/MBA/EMBA/MPH/M.PHARM/M.PHIL/PhD)

General Admission Requirements


i. Masters Programmes
At the time of application, applicants should possess a Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent from a recognized Institution in the relevant field of study.  Preference will be given to applicants with a FIRST CLASS, SECOND CLASS (UPPER OR LOWER DIVISION)
ii. Ph.D Programmes
Candidates applying for Doctor of Philosophy degree must have a Master’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized Institution and shall submit evidence of adequate training and ability to undertake the proposed programme.

Duration of Programme

Unless otherwise stated,
  1. Master’s Programmes (Full-Time) are of Two (2) Academic Years and (Part-Time) Three (3) Academic Years duration.
  2. Ph.D Programmes (Full-Time) are of Three (3) Academic Years and (Part-Time) are of Four (4) Academic Years duration.

Mode of Application

Sale of E-Vouchers/Forms for admission shall commence on Monday 2nd February, 2015.
  1. First of all candidates must purchase an eVoucher by paying an application fee of Two Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢200.00) at the locations listed below.
  2. Upon payment of the application fee, candidates will receive an eVoucher containing an application number and PIN that will grant access to the online admissions portal.
  3.  Candidates should then proceed to online admissions website: https://admissions.knust.edu.gh/pgadmissionsnew/ and begin the application process.
  4. Once the process has been completed, candidates must print out 3 copies of the completed application form from the portal and submit them to the School of Graduate Studies along with all relevant documents (Photocopies of Certificates, Recommendation letter, and transcript for those attending KNUST for the first time).

It is announced for the information of prospective Applicants (as specified above) and the general public that Application Forms for Admission to Degree/Diploma/Top-Up Programmes of Study at the University for the 2015/2016 Academic Year are now on sale.
The Sale of Admission Forms is open to the following Applicants:
  • Candidates who have Examination Results as at the time of Application.
  • 2015 Candidates awaiting results may apply.


Requirements

  • WASSCE/SSSCE Holders who have credits (A1-C6/ A-D Respectively) in the following Three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science plus credits (A1-C6) in Three Elective Subjects with an Aggregate Score of 24 or better in the relevant Area of Study.
OR
GENERAL BUSINESS CERTIFICATE (GBCE) Holders who possess passes in Three compulsory Subjects including English Language and passes in any Three Elective Subjects including Business Mathematics.
  • ADVANCED LEVEL Holders with credits in at least Five (5) subjects at the GCE ‘O’ Level (or its equivalent) including English  Language and Mathematics, plus at least two passes in the relevant subjects at the Advanced Level obtained not more than Three (3) years ago
OR
ADVANCED BUSINESS CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (ABCE) Holders with passes in Three compulsory Subjects plusThree optional subjects relevant to the programme of study, OR Applicants with Stage I of ACCA, ICA, Associate of Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB), Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) with credits at WASSCE/SSSCE in Three (3)Core Subjects and Three (3) Elective Subjects or credits at GBCE or ABCE or GCE O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics.       
  • MATURE STUDENTS who have attained the age of 25 years or above at the time of application and have credits in Five(5) GCE ‘O Level subjects including English Language and Mathematics, in addition to passing an Entrance Examination and /or Interview.
OR  
WASSCE/SSSCE Holders who have credits (A1-C6/ A-D Respectively) in the following Three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science plus credits (A1-C6/A-D) in Three Elective Subjects with an aggregate score of 24 or better in the relevant area of study.
OR
HND Holders with Three (3) years relevant working experience in addition to the Minimum Entry Requirement at WASSCE/SSSCE or Five (5) GCE O’ Level credits including English Language and Mathematics.

A Fee-Paying Facility is available to Applicants who do not meet the Competitive Departmental/Faculty Requirements and Cut-Off Points but satisfy the Minimum Entry Requirements of Aggregate 24 or better. Applicants who wish to take advantage of this facility should indicate this when filling online Application forms.

Notes:

  1. Only documents provided by applicants at the time of submission of applications shall be considered.
  2. Applicants (excluding awaiting results candidates) shall include in their application forms photocopies of their results slips and/or certificates as well as certified true copy of birth certificate.
  3. An applicant’s failure to input grades and/ or other relevant information properly on the forms/online shall deny the applicant admission to a programme of study at the university.
  4.  Admissions to all programmes of study at the university are transparently administered by the central undergraduate admissions board without any other considerations and/ or solicitations. any applicant who makes any form of solicitation to any person or group of persons for the purpose of influencing and/or gaining admission into the university does so at his/her own risk.
  5. Mandatory requirement: all applicants are required to visit the university’s admissions website (http://admissions.knust.edu.gh) to complete their application process online. Candidates are to use thecard number and pin on the e-voucher provided at the time of purchase of the forms for this purpose. Failure to do so renders the application invalid.
